“What are you doing” is the question that so often gets asked. Perhaps, the question really should be “Who’s talking about what (fill in the blank) in my neighborhood?” It’s called Location Based Searching or Geocoding. You can use Twitter search or the search function in most Twitter Clients have the same capabilities.
How does it work? Let’s say we want to know every tweet that takes place in a 50mi radius of New York City. In the search box type:
near:New York, NY within:50mi
Voila, every tweet within a 50 mile radius of New York City will be found. If you want to change that to Kilometers simply substitute km for mi. Want to spread the radius out? Change the 50 to 100.
Now here’s where it gets REALLY interesting. Want to see all of the tweets that are within 50 miles of New York City that have the word “advertising” in them? This is what your new search string will look like:
advertising near:New York, NY within:50mi
Use Twitter search for real-time business intelligence and find out who’s talking about what...where.
