How do you find people to follow? Even more importantly, how do you find good, meaningful people in your business or with your interests to follow? Those can be two of the most daunting tasks particularly for beginners. One tool I use to find people is Twellow.com. Twellow is a searchable directory that indexes all Twitter user profiles. There are a large number of predefined categories and lists. Use an entire category of names, search within the category using your own parameters or simply search across the entire database.
How to use it. From the Twellow home page click Marketing> then click subgroup Advertising> then click Ad Agencies. Now under search terms type “mi” within the Ad Agency group. You’ve now narrowed a list from 82,352 to 11 people who have listed Marketing/ Advertising/ Ad Agency in their Bios and are in the State of Michigan. Of course you could stop searching at Ad Agency and then you would have a list of 2,081 new tweeps.
Twitter just recently launched a new list feature. It can be a great way to find other people to follow. You’ll start to notice when viewing profiles on Twitter that there are lists of groups that the individual is following. With a click of a mouse you can add their list to your profile and then be able to follow those people also.
How to use it. I’ll use Christopher Barger, GM’s head of social media as an example. From the Twitter home page> click Find People> type Christopher Barger> select cbarger. Looking at his lists in the right hand column there’s a list he has created for GM related info that he’s following. Click the list and add it to your profile. You’re now following those people too.
