Before I came back to the supplier-side of the advertising fence I spent a lot of time talking to photographers and reps, particularly here in town. Things had definitely changed while I was away. By and large what I noticed was that many seemed to be walking around in a daze with their tails between their legs. The swagger was gone. The bravado had disappeared. They had been beaten down by the radically changing business, technology, process, clients and agencies. Photographers were reduced to being thought of and thinking of themselves as widget makers.
Daniel Callahan wrote a guest post on the Clreps blog. In part…
“Too often I hear from freelancers who creep and crawl and act meek as though I would be doing them some sort of favor by hiring them. Gotta tell ya, it doesn’t smack of “I can do the job” and instead makes me question their abilities. Is this joker some sort of amateur? Why are they acting like a fresh grad with no portfolio?”
