Or, putting it another way…somebody ate my lunch while I wasn’t looking. I’ve been off work for a little while taking care of some personal/family matters. While I was gone someone from out of town took work right off the family's table, money right out of my pocket and food practically right out of my mouth. You’re probably reading this thinking; it serves him right for being gone. And to a certain extent you would be correct. However, if you’re in the photography business in the Detroit area I’ve got a news flash. I’m not alone, they took it off yours too. Actually it’s not a “they”. It really is a “she” and she is 17 years old, very talented and did a major automotive project this year.
I always said that a good rep’s job is to know what the client’s want before they know it. Communicate this to your artists. Motivate them to produce samples/ tests and then voila. The clients finally figure out what they want and you and your photographer are sitting there waiting for them with that “new thing” when they show up. I give props to this gal and her rep for having what the agency was looking for when the agency figured out what it was they wanted. I certainly missed this boat. Now if I could just find a 13 year old photographer…
While we are on the subject of not missing the boat let’s talk about still photographers who shoot motion. Or maybe, still photographers who don’t. Are you still (no pun intended) thinking about shooting that first motion project? Feeling a little trepidation? Perhaps a touch overwhelmed? Take heart Wookie! You are not alone. There’s a really good interview on the Photographers on Photography blog with Michael Winokur. I think you’ll enjoy his approach to the whole process and the candid comments he makes during the interview. Watch “Life’s Small Pleasures” on the blog or go to Vimeo and see it there. Now, if I could just find that 13 year old photographer and better yet one who shoots motion. Then…
Cheers
