Just curious. Did anyone attend the creativeLive seminar this weekend with Vincent Laforet? Whew! Twenty-four hours spread over three days. All you ever wanted to know about HDDSLR filmmaking. He covered soup to nuts; equipment discussions to shooting a documentary on Saturday and then shooting a narrative on Sunday.
I'm still scratching my head as to why I watched it. After all, I'm a rep. It's not like I'm going to be a filmmaker and will need to know how to pull focus. But, as a rep I think it’s important to understand and learn the process of filmmaking. What were my big take-ways from the seminar? The mechanics of organizing and the over-arching process is very similar to the still business. If you’ve done still productions you already will have a good feel. But, multiply the complexity by a factor of say 10X.
Many of the skills that photographers acquire shooting stills are transferable. That being said, it is a completely different world. Shooting with a Canon DSLR is just like shooting with a mini motion picture camera. And the entire process is treated just like it. There are scenes, focus marks and camera marks. Heck, I now understand why there is a separate person that pulls focus.
It seems to me that a lot of still shooters aren’t making the leap into this new medium. I realize the” why not”, is a very complex subject with no single answer. Maybe the process seems a bit daunting and confusing? Maybe photographers are a wee bit embarrassed because they don’t have all the answers. After all, a professional photographer is expected to have all the answers when on a set. Or maybe they are chagrined by admitting they don’t know everything about film/ video.
Of course, maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about and still photographers want to stay still photographers. However, if that isn’t the case and a photographer was looking for a really good primary lesson on HDDSLR filmmaking they might want to consider downloading the HD movies from this weekend’s seminar.
